DI BRANDT with ARI BELATHAR at ROBSON READING SERIES in Vancouver May 19

THE ROBSON READING SERIES PRESENTS
DI BRANDT with ARI BELATHAR

On Thursday, May 19, join much-loved Canadian poet Di Brandt and translator Ari Belathar for readings from Walking to Mojácar (Turnstone Press), Brandt’s latest multilingual offering, which has been nominated for the Pat Lowther Memorial Award (among others).

Here’s what the Pat Lowther prize judges had to say:
‘Di Brandt’s Walking to Mojácar is a feast of language-play! Translations in French, German, and Spanish flow throughout the text among images of many cultures; the Métis and Mennonite to name two. Narrative, ghazal, prose-poem, elegy: all the types are there. Humour, love, pain, sorrow, grace, chaos, melancholia, confusion, and love rise to the top. The old feasts of language and art in images of Lorca, Van Gogh or traditional German hymns all blend into a palatable mix. De-centring and centring, the feast of language shifts from landscape to landscape in shades, tones, and textures until the entire work enters the realm of music.’

The evening begins at 7pm in the UBC Robson Square Bookstore/Library with readings in both English and Spanish, as well as a lively conversation to follow.

Ari Belathar, a poet in her own right and a Mexican writer-in-exile, will also be reading new work.

Admission is free and refreshments are served.
Books will be available for purchase and signing.
Don’t miss this final event of our spring season!

More on the Poets/Collaborators:
Di Brandt is an award-winning poet, essayist, editor and teacher (she holds a Canada Research Chair in Literature and Creative Writing at Brandon University) who has published more than a dozen books of poetry and creative essays, and has collaborated extensively with artists in other media. After being kidnapped and tortured by the Mexican National Army in 2001 on account of her work as an independent journalist and human rights activist, Ari Belathar escaped to Canada. Her poetry has been published in literary journals and anthologies around the world.
